2018-19 Adviser Forum West has ended
Welcome to Los Angeles, and to 2018 Forum West!
**Reminders: Please bring a notebook and pen to every session, and wear your CAC name badge at all times**

Dear CAC family,
Welcome to my home state of California and our Adviser Forum West! We are thrilled to have you here in the City of Angels and are grateful to our host chapter, the awesome USC Corps! Fight on!

Our theme this year goes to the heart of CAC’s mission -- Advancing Opportunity. The goal over the next few days is to recommit ourselves to advancing opportunity in various ways. We hope you will discover best practices from your peers, engage with the research, reflect on your journey and what may lie ahead by interacting with the alumni panel and industry workshops, and be inspired by our guest speakers whose stories capture in powerful ways the journey to advancing opportunity.

On behalf of our national team and Board of Directors, we are grateful for the work that each of you — 716 advisers serving 210,000 students in 16 states across the country — do every day. We continue to build a national movement at a critical time in our nation’s history. Let us commit to ensuring every student hears those four key words, “I believe in you” and, together, we advance opportunity.

It is an honor to serve with you!

Yours,
Nicole Hurd

Adviser Session #2: "I Know My Child Better Than Anybody Else": Responding to Parents and Creating Innovative Practices to Increase Their Engagement
Limited Capacity seats available

Many advisers cite parent engagement as one of the most challenging aspects of their service. It can be difficult to communicate with parents, let alone convince them their child should pursue a degree at a post-secondary institution. Learn about biases surrounding parent involvement in your schools and communities, craft a “10:6:4” plan to reach parents on varying engagement levels, and take efficient and effective communication practices back to your schools.

Adviser Session #2: A Practical Guide to Self-Care: How Can We Help You Help Yourself & Your Students?
Limited Capacity seats available

At times, both college advisers and high school seniors may feel stressed and overwhelmed. Explore methods for college advisers to practice self-care in their own lives and strategies they can share with students. By analyzing existing stress management techniques, peer sharing, and small group discussions, you’ll learn how to create a personalized self-care plan to prevent overload/burnout and reduce the negative effects of stress often experienced by first- and second-year advisers. You’ll also learn how to assist students in practicing self-care in both high school and college and participate in a self-care exercise that you can take back to your school.

Adviser Session #2: Engaging Students, Teachers, and Administrators to Build a College-Going Culture
Limited Capacity seats available

Developing a college-going culture can be hard for any single adviser. Discuss examples of engagement on three levels within the school—students, teachers, and administrators—to create and support a school-wide, college-going culture. Take this opportunity to share out and learn new strategies and practices, such as making the most out of low student-engagement days, cultivating departmental relationships, or conducting events to engage administrators and partners.

Adviser Session #2: The Bend and Snap: Developing Stronger Student Engagement Systems that Work in Your School
Limited Capacity seats available

Dive into the systems-building process to navigate challenges to student engagement. We’ll brainstorm student-engagement ideas that work in the context of school administration support of, and involvement in, building a college-going culture. We will consider how these solutions might be developed into sustainable systems using the “Bend and Snap,” a three-step process that 1) defines a specific challenge, 2) walks through successful and unsuccessful actions—“bends” and “snaps”—to address the challenge, and 3) examines the resulting system that can be built and its outcomes. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of systems-building, crowdsourced engagement strategies, and a unique portrait of the similarities and differences within and across our corps.
